Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients groups along with proteins and fats.

The main muscle fuel during long duration workouts is glycogen (which is the form in which sugar builds up in the muscles). So carbohydrates are an essential part in any sportman/woman´s diet, particularly on endurance sports such as swimming, running or cycling.

Not only our muscles feeds on sugar, this is also food of first choice for our brain.

The main sources of carbohydrates in our diet are cereals, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, beans (although they also contain lots of protein), fruits and vegetables.

The type of carbohydrate chosen in each moment must depend on its complexity (simple and complex carbohydrates) and its glycemic index (rate of release of sugar into the blood).
